No Invasive Plants Found in Crescent Lake in 2020!

I am happy to report that NO invasive plants were found in Crescent Lake during our recent summer surveying!  The volunteer “CLIPPERS” (Crescent Lake Invasive Plant Patrol) monitored all but one sector of the Crescent Lake shoreline and found only native Maine aquatic plants! To all the volunteers that participated in the Clippers program, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all for a great job!

CLWA strongly supports the Clippers and the Courtesy Boat Inspectors (located at the Route 85 ramp during the summer) for all the work they monitor boats and aquatic plants. Without CLWA’s commitment to helping these two programs annually, it would be a “true guessing game” to determine whether or not Crescent is an invasive plant-free lake. (con.)

Your annual donations help both of these valuable programs continue.

There were many changes in communicating and training by Lake Stewards of Maine (formerly VLMP). All training sessions, review of various lake topics, specific review of multiple plants, and meetings with all the Invasive plant Coordinators for the whole state were all conducted via Zoom meetings all summer.

Due to Covid-19, many new webinars were created and can be viewed in your homes whenever you wish on this website.  There is an excellent 3-part IPP training course that can be taken over the winter so that you can be a certified patroller next summer.

Winter Message From Our President
  Greetings!
I sincerely hope that most of you were able to enjoy our beautiful lake this past summer season. I know that many of your plans for spending time at or on Crescent Lake were altered or cancelled this year. As we come to the end of an unsettling and stressful 2020, I look forward, optimistically, to 2021 in the belief that we will experience better times in the months ahead and that we will return to our more normal activities at the lake.

As we hope and plan for the coming year’s enjoyment of the lake, it is a good time to think about what each of us can do to help preserve and protect this wonderful natural resource that we all love and enjoy. What are some ways you can help achieve this goal, you may ask?

There are many ways you can help. As a lakefront landowner you can maintain a healthy natural vegetative buffer along your shoreline. This reduces runoff of nutrients into the lake. Our LakeSmart program and our website offer many tips along these lines.

Volunteering as a Clipper, our invasive plant patrollers, is another great way to help.   Their vigilance is a second line of defense after the CBI program to ward off any unwanted invasive species!

Speaking of the CBI program, have you ever considered volunteering or even better seeking summer employment as a Courtesy Boat Inspector?

Lastly, continuing your membership or becoming a new member is critical to our ability to support and sustain the aforementioned programs that benefit the health of Crescent Lake.

Thank you and I hope to see you at the lake this coming year!
Russ Hutchinson
President, CLWA
